SeedMaster 2 Crystallization Transmitter and Seeding Device is an optional control unit for the K-Patents Process Refractometer PR-23-GP and K-Patents Process Refractometer PR-01-S. SeedMaster 2 provides real-time information about supersaturation and crystal content, which can be used to precise crystallisation control.

The SeedMaster 2 is designed by Proficon. Inquires should be addressed to Mr. Lajos Rozsa at Proficon at e-mail address:

SeedMaster 2 uses liquid concentration data provided by K-Patents Process Refractometer and data by any sensor that measures massecuite solids content, density or power/current consumption of the stirrer motor. Based on this data the SeedMaster 2 control unit provides real-time information on up to 7 important massecuite parameters, including supersaturation and crystal content. It can also be used to implement automatic or manual seeding of one or two crystallizers. 4-20 mA current outputs of any of the two (per pan) selected massecuite parameters are available as standard. All parameters and measured data are available with TCP/IP, MODBUS TCP (Etherner) compatible communication features for computer or control system.

Crystallization has a major effect on product quality and cost of production. Supersaturation is the driving force of crystallization and crystal growth (speed of crystallization) depends on this parameter. Excessive superaturation results in poor crystal quality (fines and conglomerates). These are melted, concentrated (re-circulated) and crystallized again, which leads to waste of time and energy, decreased yield of sugar per strike, increased use of water and increased cost of production.

The SeedMaster 2 crystallization transmitter takes into account the multivariable function of the mother liquor variables and provides a set of mathematical equations that determine the value of supersaturation. It also provides massecuite density, massecuite solids content, crystal content, consistency, mother liquor purity, and a number of additional outputs such as mother liquor concentration, temperature, motor consumption and massecuite level (if a level transmitter is available).

The SeedMaster 2 automatic seeding device can operate two pans simultaneoulsy. It has two digital outputs (per pan) which can be used to warn the operator on approaching seeding and to implement automatic seeding. The seeding can be based on supersaturation or density. The device can be used either for manual seeding by the local operator or automatic seeding via process control system.

The key features:

  • Provides in-line accurate and reliable information on supersaturation and other massecuite parameters for different modes of seeding and for advanced strike control by a control system
  • High and/or low alarming on supersaturation can be set
  • Performs seeding automatically, when supersaturation equals the set-points.
  • Advanced operator panel shows real-time strike status information of both pans, data archive and basic strike history data over the last four (4) strikes.
  • Supersaturation data is also available as 4-20 mA output and digital (Ethernet) communication to other equipment (recorders, computers, control system).
