A breakfast cereal plant in Lancacshire, England, manufactures a high quality range of ready-to-eat breakfast cereals. The cereals are manufactured with conventional and extrusion processing. The company produces the following cereals: Corn Flakes, Bran Flakes, Wheat Flakes, Coated Flakes, Fruit & Fibre, Shredded Bran Sticks and Squares.
The customer has been using a K-Patents refractometer in their Lancashire plant with great success. The refractometer monitors the sugar concentration of the syrup that is sprayed on the flakes. Typical concentration value for sugar is 78-80 Brix. It is important to know the right concentration since it affects the drying and the taste of the cereals. If there is excess sugar on the flakes, the drying time is shorter and vice versa, if there is less sugar.
